The federal agency that regulates surface mining could decide as early as next week whether to merge two northern Arizona coal mines under one permit, a move that could allow one to resume operations despite concerns about its water use.


With 2008 coming to a close and a nationwide recession recently confirmed, economists from the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management will discuss the recession, falling housing prices and budget-challenged governments.

A new round of layoffs began Wednesday at the Arizona Republic as the newspaper’s parent company Gannett Inc. looks to trim 10 percent from its daily newspapers across the U.S.


The Arizona Republic has laid off 68 employees, while 29 employees accepted voluntary severance. Republic Publisher John Zidich announced the cuts in an e-mail sent to employees Wednesday.
