The State of Hawaii and the Hawaiian Electric Company on Tuesday endorsed an effort to build an alternative transportation system based on electric vehicles with swappable batteries and an “intelligent” battery recharging network, The New York Times’s John Markoff reported.


Hawaii joined California Tuesday as the second state in the nation to link to the Better Place network of plug-in electric vehicles.


The alt-energy company Better Place, which has taken its vision of electric cars to Israel, Australia, Denmark and major California cities, is now coming to Hawaii. [More]

Hawaii's Republican Gov. Linda Lingle has announced plans to create an electric car recharging network throughout the islands by 2012. The state is working with a Silicon Valley company that will build tens of thousands of battery recharging points throughout the islands. Many in Hawaii would like to see the plan put in place because drivers there pay some of the highest gas prices in the nation.

Electric car company Better Place said on Tuesday it plans to develop a $200 million to $250 million electric car network in Hawaii, the latest market to join such efforts to cut global warming carbon emissions and pricey fuel imports.
