BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ An Alabama Power generating plant in Jefferson County released more mercury into the air than any other power plant in the nation last year, according to an environmental group.

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Alabama Court of Civil Appeals has reversed an arbitrator's decision to return David Thomas to his job at Bishop State Community College. As of this afternoon, Thomas, a history teacher, was still employed at the two-year school.

Alabama’s jobless rate increased to 5.6 percent in Oct. 2008 – the state’s highest rate in almost five years – according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations.


There are 120,590 unemployed in Alabama.


A hard freeze warning is in effect for the inland counties of southwest Alabama, northern portions of Mobile and Baldwin counties, and the interior sections of southeast Mississippi from midnight tonight to 7 a.m. Saturday....
