Nebraska lawmakers voted Friday to change a controversial safe-haven law by restricting the age under which a child can be dropped off at a hospital without the parents being prosecuted.


Nebraska state lawmakers on Friday overhauled a law that allowed people to abandon their children of any age legally at hospitals, a senator's office confirmed.

OMAHA, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Nebraska's unique safehaven law devised to care for unwanted infants became, as written, an unwanted open invitation for all problem children, officials say.


Nebraska has revised its safe-haven law for unwanted children to cover infants no older than 30 days. Gov. Dave Heineman signed the measure, which the Legislature approved earlier today. It takes effect at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow. The previous version of the law, which was intended to save newborns that might otherwise have been abandoned outdoors, set no age limit. The new law will allow only infants up to 30 days old to be abandoned at hospitals, closing the loophole that applied to all minors up to 18 years. Nebraska today closed a loophole in a controversial law that had allowed parents to abandon their children at hospitals.


Nebraska lawmakers are expected to add a 30-day age limited to safe-haven law. Six Nebraska senators will also form a task force on child drop-offs.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation will be getting a new chief administrator. Bureau President Keith Olsen said Friday that Rob Robertson of Roca will be taking over in April.
