It wasn't strange roommates, demanding classes or leaving home that had incoming freshmen Sean Bloomfield and Colton Witte nervous this summer. Instead, the 18-year-olds had raging rapids, navigation and polar bears on their minds. Such hazards were real possibilities on the boys' 49-day canoe expedition, which took them from Minneapolis to the Arctic Ocean.


Microwaves and ironing boards came out of trunks; parents wiped sweat from their foreheads. Resident assistants scurried around troubleshooting, and roommates met over stacks of boxes.


Compatibility is key when it comes to communal living, particularly when the room is smaller than most studio apartments. So some Cal students have used StarRez, a company that specializes in housing and conference software, in their search for compatible roommates. Vote: How bad was your worst roommate?
